Sooo, Black folk out here really pissed about Bill Cosby being convicted like we as Black women haven't been confronted by and encountered men like him our whole lives! Like we don't know men who live double lives. Like the men who be out here posing with the "love of their lives" don't also be finding their way into our DMs. Like, women have to be justifiably attractive to be raped. Yea, cause rape is about that & not power. 🙄
Folks out here look silly. And what's worse, Bill Cosby got to live out his whole life knowing what he did. He's 83 and blind! His best years are behind him. These women had to sit through seeing him get awards, being spoken highly about, accepting honorary degrees, and hearing about all the good he was doing for the Black community. Imagine if you was violated 20 years ago and was forced to watch the demon who caused the offense excel in front of your eyes! Imagine if even after all the fanfare, someone recorded the festivities and played them in syndicate. Bill Cosby was trash WHILE playing Cliff, the same way MLK Jr. was trash for sleeping around on Coretta WHILE being the face of the Civil Rights Movement. The actions they participated in are apart of their legacy because they CHOSE to add them.
I ain't covering up the stains of these sins! That's not my job. My name is not Olivia Pope. Moreover, all too often in the Black community we find ourselves feeling like we need to do the work of defending "us" as though we are a monolith and the actions of one speak for all. Nah, bruh. If Bill Cosby is now in the hands of a system that has no regard for Black folk, why should I be overly concerned about that considering he was not concerned about getting caught? With his knowledge of the times, he was well aware of the consequences but like so many others in power, they often see themselves above the law.
Being Black in this country we are well aware that the system is stacked against us. Yes, there is a great possibility that all the White men in Hollywood and the music industry who violated others will not be convicted. Bill Cosby made the mistake of thinking he was like them. He thought all of those pudding pops would afford him a freedom absent of the scrutiny given to Black bodies. He thought speaking about respectability would disassociate him from the hood and provide a open door to acceptability among Hollywood's elite. He played himself.
